A grand edition, limited to 500 copies, for promotional use only (not for sale). Presented here in lossless format (.APE), complete with accompanying written material, as a torrent, due to the size of it (~3gigs). The torrent was found (not created by dmtls) and must be kept alive, given the nature and the small distribution of the release. Merzbau will seed it on a regular basis. [It will be immediately removed, if there are any complaints received by the artists featured in it or by owners of the material contained within]

Hermann Nitsch, 6 Tage Spiel - Das Orgien Mysterien Theater. Day 3: Day of Dionysus (Excerpt) 1998

12741.jpg

“A psychoanalytically-oriented dramaturgy allows the Dionysian to burst forth from within us. Suppressed areas of inner impulses are made visible. The actions with flesh, blood and slaughtered animals plumb the collective areas of our unconscious minds. The paramount aim and purpose of the festival is a profound affirmation of our existence, our life and our creation. The mysticism of being leads to a permanent festival of life. [Š] All are invited to drink. A mass intoxication is imperative, an all-embracing intoxication of the participants is ordained, unrestrained drinking takes place, day and night, in vineyards and cellars. Slaughter of a pig. GRAPES, FRUIT and TOMATOES, ANIMAL LUNGS, FLESH and INTESTINES are trampled on in ecstasy. People trample in SLAUGHTERED ANIMAL CARCASSES FILLED WITH INTESTINES, in troughs full of blood and wine. Extreme noise from the orchestras. Slaughtering of the bull, slaughtering of two pigs. Disembowelment.” - Nitsch, Das Orgien Mysterien Theater

Jani Christou - Epicycle

EPICYCLE (196 8) for instruments, actors and voices (continuum and events) was commissioned by the 3rd Hellenic Week Of Contemporary Music in Athens and premiered on December 20, 1968 in the Hilton Hotel in Athens. That first performance lasted approximately one hour and included a film by the painter Kosmas Xenakis running parallel to it. In the spirit of a happening, everyone was invited to participate in the piece. Epicycle is perhaps the most improvisational of Christou musical scores : playing rules are fixed, whereas the duration and type of musical and theatrical events are arbitary. Tension results from the convergence of random, improvised or planned actions with an even, undisturbed musical continuum.

…The recording presented here consists of a passage from the original concert recording (of the premiere) which was later re-mixed by Christou in the studio. There are four versions of this remix in the Christou archives, all of which have an approximate duration of 9′35 : EPICYCLE “Original”, “I”, “II”, and “III”. Though differing from one another with respect to sound characteristics, all copies have the same abrupt end. The tape labeled “Original” is the version which appears on this recording.

The piece posted here is taken from the CD “Jani Christou - Conducts His Own Works” ed. RZ 1013 and it serves as an introduction to one of the greatest composers of our time. It is also suitable to  accompany the reading of the previous post.
