The music of The Microscopic Septet was the sound of jazz in 20th C. America: all of it, from Ellington to Ayler, bebop to Zorn, Dixieland to experimental, captured in a microcosm. It distilled the essence of jazz as a popular music into a sound that swung, a music that was intelligent, sometimes smart-aleck, and always good clean fun. Optimistic and upbeat, full of innocent confidence, the Microscopic Septet captured not only the sound of jazz, but also the sound - or soundtrack - of 20th Century America. …

Based on a re-sampling of Heiner Goebbels and 23 Alfred Harth’s sampled rendition of 1960’s Revolutionary Pekinese Opera from China the Peking Opera (from the LP Frankfurt-Pekin: CD Goebbels Heart) from 1984.
Ver. 1.28 is a updated edition of the original version released from Trigram in 1995.

All music by Otomo Yoshihide, the performers, and the sampled guests.

John Zorn : A musical genius

Earlier this year (in March), Columbia University’s School of the Arts (SoA) has awarded the 2007 William Schuman Award to one of the most prolific composers of our time, John Zorn.

“The School of the Arts is pleased to present the William Schuman Award to John Zorn, whose astonishingly diverse and extraordinary body of work has enlightened, startled and enchanted its listeners,” said Dan Kleinman, acting dean of SoA. “His lasting contribution to the repertoire of today has changed the landscape of composition.”

No sound in this film. I have watched it with Throbbing Gristle’s In The Shadow Of The Sun playing in the background. It worked rather well.
